Sin: Self-Service

Judas became indignant when he witnessed Mary break
“a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed
the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair.” He challenged,
“Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii
and given to the poor?” But his concern wasn’t with the poor.
His concern was for his own benefit, for he could have liquidated the ointment for cash and kept some for himself.

Mary’s humble service, on the other hand, was genuine.
Mary’s act of breaking a jar of perfume parallels
the way God loves the world. God broke his most prized treasure over the lowliest sinners to wash away their sins.
